Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) means illness or inflammation of the muscles and nervous system. It is sometimes also referred to as Myalgic Encephalopathy
The illness has also been diagnosed as Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVS) or Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS). Both refer to the immune system irregularities noted by some sufferers. A commonly used simpler variation on the latter term is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
There are some similarities with fibromyalgia, though this is not regarded as the same illness.
Patients frequently use the term 'ME' as it describes their symptoms. Doctors prefer 'CFS' because there is no evidence of muscle inflammation.
This site tends towards 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' simply because it is the term most searched for on the web.
